Travel and 4WDs can be a fun combination, however there are a few things you should take into consideration before purchase of a 4WD.

There are two different types of 4WD vehicles. One type keeps the 4WD active at all times, the other allows you to shift into the 4WD mode as needed. Each of these have both advantages and disadvantages.

Vehicles that remain in the 4WD mode all the time usually require more fuel than those that give the driver the option. Steering is much different when you are in 4WD, so you may need to take some time to get used to the differences in a vehicle that uses the option all of the time. An advantage of this type vehicle is that 4WD is on when you need it. You do not have to get out to switch in hubs or shift the vehicle into the mode if road conditions suddenly change and become slick.

Optional use 4WD vehicles tend to get better gas mileage, although less than a two wheel drive vehicle that does not have the additional weight of the 4WD. It will steer like a conventional vehicle if out of 4WD and like the all wheel drive vehicle when in 4WD. Some vehicles require the drive to lock in the hubs from the outside of the vehicle and select the 4WD option from inside the vehicle in order to have four wheel drive active.

Travel in a vehicle equipped with four wheel drive is much safer in the winter. You will be able to drive on snow packed roads with better traction than other vehicles. You may not need chains to reach a ski resort. In the other seasons you will be able to travel in areas normal vehicles may not be able to pass.

Travel and 4WDs can make your trip safer.
