There is so much more to do in the Arenal Volcano & La Fortuna area that a few days is just not enough! Because after you've done the majority of the adventure activities, a place that you can't miss is the Cano Negro National Wildlife Refuge.

After you've done the majority of the adventure activities, a place not to be missed is the Cano Negro National Wildlife Refuge. From December to February you can see hundreds of migratory birds who stop here to feed. They take a stopover in this area in search of lagoons where they can eat the plants and the small fish.

Sunset Tours, Desafio and Canoa Aventura are great tour operators that offer an amazing tour by boat in this region. Whichever you choose make sure to book your tickets early. It is also a good idea to stay in a hotel with a centric location this will make it easier for the tour operator to pick you up. Normally you will be picked up early in the morning and driven through papaya farms, bananas and pineapple plantations and taken for a float.

Most of the tours offer guides that will show you everything there is to see.

Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge: It is abundant with plants, small fish and other wildlife. Here conservation of natural resources and the rational use of these ecosystems is promoted. It is formed from the overflow of two rivers, the Rio Frio River and the smaller Monica River.

There is plenty of water to go around until the dry season when the wet marshes dry up, staying dry until the rainy season begins again in May. Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge is the heart of a new UNESCO biosphere reserve named "Water And Peace." A biosphere reserve is an area of great natural wealth.

Why would you want to visit it? The main reason to visit Cano Negro is because it hosts hundreds of migratory birds that gather to feast on the natural riches of this place. These birds fly from North America all the way to South America and they stop here to rest and feed.

Undoubtedly, this place is a bird-watchers paradise!

Insider Tips: Always wear comfortable clothes. It's really hot out here. There are no public facilities here like hotels so don't come on your own. Don't forget your mosquito repellent, camera and bottled water.
