The essence of backpacking is to take all that you need for your trip in a single bag that can be carried on your back, and therefore taking unnecessary items is not an option. Most people would agree though that a computer is an essential item these days.
Still, you might not be convinced that it really is a necessary item to take on a trip away. After all, by packing a netbook, something else will be have to be left at home. So, here are some reasons why netbooks are so great for backpackers...
Reason #1 - Affordability
Netbooks continue to be inexpensive relative to traditional notebook computers. A decent netbook can be had for between $200 and $400, depending on the specific features you want.
You might think - why not just save an extra $200-400 by not taking any computing equipment at all? However, you will then find yourself paying by the hour, on probably a daily basis, to use computers in Internet shops, and those hourly costs soon add up
Reason #2 - Size
Backpacks have to be carried around a lot, and whilst you might not think that a few extra pounds makes much of a difference, they do. Netbooks weight that little though, most are around a pound or so, that you will hardly even know that you are carrying it.
The compact size of a netbook also means that it is much easier to conceal than a standard laptop. You do not want to flaunt the fact that you have computer equipment on you, as it may make you a target for thieves, and with a netbook, you do not have to, as it is small and discreet.
Reason # 3 - Utility
Netbooks continue to pack in more and more features these days. Just a few things that backpackers can use them for include writing emails to keep family and friends up-to-date with their adventures, uploading photos to Facebook, writing a travel blog, or phoning home on Skype.
Also, thanks to the power of the Internet, a range of tools and extensive travel information are just a click away from the savvy backpacker. Backpackers can quickly get a variety of directions and information on attractions in a few short minutes.
Reason # 4 - Memories
For those eager to preserve the memories of their trip, netbooks offer a variety of ways to do so. In addition to word processing devices and web browsers for journaling and blogging, most netbooks now include a webcam and microphone.
Due to the large sizes of the hard drives, nothing needs to be left out unless you want to leave it out. All of your memories will be kept safe and secure in one place.
So, for a small investment of money, a netbook can turn a traditional backpacking trip into an even more rewarding and informed experience.
