Bass fishing Christmas cards are a sign that you are sending it to someone who has a passion for bass fishing. Modern bass fishing has evolved a great deal from its humble beginnings in the 19th century to a multi billion dollar industry. Bass is today a leading game fish for the avid fisherman in the United States.

It has inspired the development of a whole industry supporting this activity including fishing gear, boats, and float tubes. Specialty Christmas cards are another aspect of the trend inspired by this sport. To choose the best card, you should know something about the bass genre.

The quality of the water, the food supply influence which type of bass can be found in certain waters and regions and not others. The spirit of the bass enhances their appeal fo the sports fisher. The most popular types are from the black bass family which is a genre of the sunfish variety.

The largemouth bass is easy to identify by the dark, almost black, stripes that run horizontally down its flanks. The smallmouth bass has dark vertical strips instead of horizontal ones and are very susceptible to pollution. The spotted bass is similar to the largemouth bass, but it has a smaller mouth that is similar to the smallmouth bass size. Its coloring is almost identical to the largemouth bass. The Guadalupe bass is much smaller in size than the other three bass types and is located in a more limited location. There are other species and subspecies of this fish which although referred to as bass is actually a member of the sunfish family. Hence, black bass which is a part o the sunfish family should not be confused with other unrelated fish "bass" in other countries such as the peacock bass.

Bass fishing began in the 19th century as a subsistence exercise. Times have changed and bass is the target of anglers who fish for sport and are more likely to catch and release the fish. Fishing bass for sport took off when largemouth and smallmouth bass began to be stocked outside their native habitats. The support provided by the U. S. Department of Agriculture to fisheries management led to expansion in the largemouth population.

With the postwar fishing boom supplied funds for more substantive fishery management. This particularly aided southern states and their importing of largemouth bass that thrived where other species could not. Greater efforts in recent years to improve water quality and improved management practices have benefited smallmouth populations and led to their resurgence. There are several major bass fishing competitions in the United States with the two most dominant circuits being the Bassmasters and the FLW series. One southern state which is a major haven for bass fishing enthusiasts is Florida.
