What To Know About Buying A Skimboard

Skimboarding began at Laguna Beach, California, in the 1920s, when local lifeguards made skimboards from pieces of wood - a far cry from the modern skimboard that you see at beaches today. The sport has made a comeback all over the world, and boards are made of wood, plastic or fibreglass.

Skimboarding is very like surfing except the rider begins in the shallow part of the shoreline. He or she runs, throws the board into a wave backwash, jumps on the board and rides into the sea. The rider then catches a wave back to the shoreline, like surfing. It's a great recreational activity and, of course, provides you with plenty of exercise.

Another characteristic of skimboarding is the performance of a series of tricks on the shallow water. This is called 'flatland' and the rider carries out slick maneuvers with odd names like shuv-its and ollies. It is for this reason that skimboards are more buoyant, smaller and lighter than surfboards.

Some factors must be borne in mind when choosing a board, especially if you are a rookie. Visit your local water sports specialist store and ask for some assistance when it comes to the board size. Your board should be suitable for your ability, size and weight.

Test a few out by placing them on the floor. A good board will sit flatly with its nose and tail lifted slightly. Check the underneath section - if you want a fast ride, this part would be more suitable in fibreglass or plastic. If you want a board that will last longer, go for one with wood underneath. Wood is stronger and will last longer.

Skilled riders often have two types of boards for different purposes. For instance, large boards are more suitable for wave-riding. A rounder, smaller board is better for performing tricks. For all-round versatility, a medium skimboard will allow you to do tricks and ride waves. There are plenty of online websites to give you more info on this growing sport.
