Snowboarding and skiing are the most popular choices for outdoor winter activities, however, there are also some other great activities to try out too. Snowshoeing, skating and tobogganing are just as enjoyable, whilst being significantly more affordable.
Lots of people have already experienced the thrilling buzz of shooting down the side of a hill on a a toboggan, but have not renewed the experience since their teenage years. There is no reason to view it as simply kids fun though- lots of winter sports resorts now have areas dedicated to tobogganing. It is a great way for children and adults to share time together having fun. As for the cost, there is a wide range of plastic toboggans in stores for less than $20, and that is all the you need to participate.
Most winter resorts have either a dedicated ice ring, or a lake nearby that has frozen over. The basic skills can be picked up in less than an hour, and you can be effortlessly skating around in just half a day. Cheap skates are available at many stores that sell sports equipment, or larger toy stores, for around $20-30, and are a particularly good investment as they can be used anytime throughout the year at local ice rings as well.
Many winter resorts have snowshoeing trails available for their guests. Why are snowshoes needed to use the trails? Because wearing them makes walking down and around snowy areas much less hardwork, and you can therefore cover a lot more ground and experience more of the beautiful surroundings. While if you plan on purchasing your own snowshoes they will cost you about $150-200, you can rent a pair from a store at most resorts for much less - just $15-20 per day.
So, there is no need to let a shortage of money stop you from having fun in the snow!
