In the 19th century, Aspen used to be a silver-mining town. As the silver price took a nosedive in 1893, it had crashed the town's economy. From a population of 12,000, its population has shrunk down to 700 by 1930s. It was until this time that a small scale ski runs and resorts were developed. Currently, Aspen USA Ski Resort is one of the most favorite and most famous ski destinations in the West.

Aspen USA Ski Resort, alongside with Snowmass Village, is located in the Elk Mountain branch. This ski resort offers four major mountains which are suitable for skiing and boarding. These include the Aspen Mountain, the Buttermilk, Snowmass and the Aspen Highland. Whatever your skills would be, you will definitely find a place in one of these ski areas.

Also known as the Ajax by the locals, Aspen Mountain is the premier ski resort in Aspen. It is one of the most appreciated ski resort especially by the rich and famous. It is located at the foothill of Elk Mountain, just south of the town. It is where the experienced skiers and boarders go as it provides them intermediate to advance slopes. This is definitely a no place for beginners. Aside from skiing and boarding, one may also enjoy its 18 hole golf-frisbee course and snowcat tours. Guests can also enjoy the spectacular view of the countryside with Silver Queen Gondola. Also, Aspen Mountains has also the world's first skier-only terrain park.

Aspen Highland. Located next to Aspen Mountain is the Aspen Highland. It is more like a local mountain, offering a more advanced and intense run which includes the new and famous Highland Bowl. It was on 2002 when it opened and has been the pride of the Aspen Highland.

Snowmass. Snowmass is one of the largest ski resorts in Aspen. From the town, it usually takes about 25 minutes of travel. It is a suitable tourist destination for families. Recent developments were the new detachable quad chairlift. This new lift can carry around 2,000 people per hour to a height of 2,212 feet. During the ride, guests can enjoy the magnificent and spectacular view of the central Rockies and the Maroon Bells. Though it is popular for being a friendly ski resort, it also offers challenging ski terrains, mogul runs, terrain parks and glided terrains.

If you are an inexperienced skier or boarder, do not be depressed for there is an appropriate location for you - the Buttermilk. Though it may be surrounded by big and famous resorts, the Buttermilk itself had made its name. Actually, it is famous that it has been used by the ESPN for Winter X-games, not only once but for several times already.

As mentioned earlier, it is the most suitable place for beginners. The owner of the resort would really want to provide an area wherein inexperienced skiers and boarders can practice. Moreover, the resort also offers a world-renowned ski school where you can learn the sport with runs ranging from beginners to a more advanced and complex runs.

Another major area is boarding. Snowmass houses the longest terrain park which is convenient for boarders. It is equipped with a superpipe, a beginners' lane and over 30 rails.
